Literacy Programs of New Jersey

MIDDLESEX COUNTY LIBRARIES

Literacy Programs of New Jersey (LPNJ) has conducted a successful program in Middlesex County for 27 years in Middlesex County.  The organization was started by the 24 libraries in Middlesex County to carry out their literacy mission, and those libraries continue to support LPNJ through an annual assessment.  LPNJ believes that literacy services should be community-based and readily accessible to everyone who is in need of them.  In addition, libraries are one of the best vehicles for delivering our services.  LPNJ serves two kinds of students:  Adults who need help in learning to read and write are called Basic Literacy (BL) students.  Foreign-born adults who want to improve their ability to understand and speak English as a Second Language (ESL) are called ESL students.  LPNJ offers individuals who wish to become tutors a combined training program that enables them to tutor either student.

LPNJ provides free Basic Literacy or ESL instruction for adults in a library close to their home.  This program is the safety net that helps that segment of the population for whom traditional adult education programs are either inaccessible or too difficult.  Many of our students are prevented from taking part in the adult school classes because of their work schedule and/or transportation problems.

Since 1981 Literacy Programs of New Jersey has been the primary literacy organization providing literacy services to the citizens of Middlesex County in cooperation with 24 participating public libraries.

There’s so much that sets Rainbow Academy apart from other child care and early education providers. For starters, Rainbow Academy is not a franchise. They are a family operated and owner-operated family of centers. If you have a suggestion or problem, you can take it right to the top. Our owner-director represents just one of many lines of communication with parents to keep them informed, enrich the parent/child relationship, and ease anxiety for the entire family.

Check out the Rainbow Academy website www.rainbowacademy.com and read about all that they can offer your child or grandchild!

The Rainbow Academy also has a Foundation which is dedicated to promoting literacy.  They know that every child needs a strong foundation for literacy, including the motivation to learn to read.  Reading enriches children’s experiences and stretches their imagination, a key ingredient for future success.

But did you know… a parent’s involvement in supporting their children’s learning habits and skills is an extremely important aspect of a child’s future success?  A new federal study by the National Center for Educational Statistics finds that “an estimated one in seven American adults, approximately 32 million, have such low literacy skills that they would be challenged to understand a medication's side effects listed on a pill bottle.”

“If no parent is left behind, no child will be left behind”

Therefore in order to support the children, it is also necessary to strengthen and support the adults in our communities.

Several of Rainbow Academy centers are hosting Adult Literacy Workshops and Classes during the evening hours.  Rainbow Academy will also be supporting the work of LPNJ by holding Fundraising Events for the Rainbow Academy Foundation throughout the year.

Tutors from the Literacy Programs of New Jersey and Rainbow Academy will work with adults to teach them Basic Reading Skills and English as a Second Language meeting a minimum of one hour a week.  In 2008, 204 Literacy Volunteers spent over 12,000 hours working with 421 students!

Our program success is due to the support of many individuals, corporations and foundations.
Without their support we would not be able to touch the number of lives that we do.

On behalf of the LPNJ Board of Directors, students, tutors, families and staff we say -

Thank you!
